What’s life like in Baghdad for Joint Base Lewis-McChord 547th Medical Company?

“It’s been very quiet,” Sgt. Jonathan Strand told Slate for a New Year’s Day story. “It’s definitely a change from the last time I was here. A lot of the new medics, they don’t have to go through what we went through. It has calmed down a lot. It’s died down.”

Strand’s on second deployment to Iraq, with his first in 2007. His last tour was marked by frequent rocket attacks and occasional mass casualty incidents. This time, his assignment centers more on teaching Iraqi doctors.
