Another of Joint Base Lewis-McChord’s Stryker brigades has returned from combat, but for a few soldiers in the trail party. That means two of the three brigades are home.
More than 200 soldiers with the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division reunited with their loved ones at the local base early Friday. Among those getting the welcome wagon was the command team, including Col. Dave E. Funk and Command Sgt. Major Alan D. Bjerke.
In what was its third tour of Iraq since the war began, the 3rd Brigade and its nearly 4,000 soldiers deployed in August 2009 to Diyala province. Two full batallions returned in June, after closing their bases as part of the overall drawdown of U.S. forces in Iraq, according to Fort Lewis officials. Most of the rest of the brigade came home in July.
With the recent return of 5th Brigade from Afghanistan, that leaves the 4th Brigade as the last of the local Stryker units to redeploy. It is expected to return from the Baghdad area in the next several weeks.
My son will be coming home in a few weeks with the 4th Brigade. I want to Thank all of you for your prayers, packages, and kind thoughts during his deployment.
