Construction to replace security devices will bring lane closures and traffic delays beginning Wednesday at the Madigan Army Medical Center entrance to Joint Base Lewis McChord.
The work is scheduled through Aug. 16, according to a news release.
It involves digging up and moving metal plates that can be raised to prevent traffic from entering the base when security is heightened, a spokesman said.
The Madigan entrance is located at Exit 122/Berkeley Street off of Interstate 5.
Traffic there will be reduced to two lanes headed into the base and one out of the base for most of each day during the construction period, the news release said.
Afternoon commuters will get a break: There will be two outbound lanes open from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. During those hours, only one lane will remain open for entering the base at the Madigan gate.
The speed limit through the construction site is 15 mph.
Workers and people with business on the base can avoid the construction by using the main Lewis-McChord gate at I-5 Exit 120; the Logistics Center entrance at I-5 Exit 123/Thorne Lane; or the Lincoln-Rainier gate, which connects to Military Road.
