A spike in military sexual assault

The military saw an 11 percent spike in the number of people reporting sexual assaults during the 2009 fiscal year, the Pentagon announced today. A total of 3,230 reports were filed across the four services.

This is bad news. Already 55 percent of all women who served in the armed forces say they’ve suffered some form of military sexual trauma (a term that includes sexual harassment and sexual assault), according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

So what are the numbers at Joint Base Lewis-McChord? I’ve emailed the public affairs folks and will let you know when I hear back.
