Landmines of course have been around for quite some time (as early as 1277 A.D. --you can blame the chinese!) Multiple mortar shells tied together, and buried under a few inches of dirt are not mines. By the question posed I assume you are really sayin "We'll why didn't they think about IED's when they were designing the Stryker?" The same question could be applied to the Humvee, or even the Canadian LAV which the Stryker design is based upon. The Stryker as we know it, has basically been around since 2002 / 2003 when extensive testing was being done at FT Lewis, and other areas such as FT Polk.

One thing to consider in design: Survivability of the crew members. More soldiers come home alive because of the design of the Stryker. With the Addition of the V-shaped hull, even more soldiers will come home alive. The Stryker can be compared to the MRAP: It's like comparing a Cadillac with with a ford maverick: both get ya there, but there is simply much more "car" with the Cadillac-plus the caddy has airbags, ON-Star, and a docking station for a mp3 player--the maverick has an AM radio-- hope that helps. Ok, I'm done for now!
