A Fort Lewis soldier was killed Wednesday in southern Afghanistan when a bomb detonated near his vehicle.

Spc. Kyle A. Coumas, a 22-year-old infantryman from Lockeford, Calif., was killed in Kandahar province, where much of 5th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division battling an entrenched Taliban presence.

Coumas is the 18th soldier from 5th Brigade to die since the 4,000-member unit left Fort Lewis in July. Twelve of those deaths have come from Coumas’ 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment.

He is the second Fort Lewis soldier in the past four days to die in Afghanistan. Spc. Michael A. Dahl Jr., also of the 1-17 Infantry, was killed Saturday.

The battalion has been fighting throughout the Arghandab River valley north of Kandahar city. The soldiers are tasked with clearing Taliban from the area of adobe villages and orchards.

No other details of the attack were released.

Coumas was on his first deployment. He joined the Army in February 2007 and reported to Fort Lewis four months later.

Matt Aguire, a friend of Coumas since the two attended the same elementary school, said the soldier long had a deep interest in the military, so it wasn’t a surprise when he enlisted.

Coumas and Aguire saw each other for the final time last summer at a barbecue in Lakewood.

“He was a good man,” Aguire wrote in an e-mail, “and I hope his memory will live on.”

Regardless of how you spin it, twelve deaths in a single battalion since July is more than significant. I say that as a veteran of two Vietnam combat tours.

One hopes that the Commander in Chief will soon find time in his busy schedule to arrive at an idea of what the mission is for which these people are sacrificing their lives.

God bless yet another of my fallen brothers. I will be there soon to join in the fight, your death will not be in vain. All of my thoughts and prayers are with your family and loved ones. Thank you for your service and your sacrifice. God Keep You and Your Immortal Soul.

God bless him and his family….

Jess, perhaps you haven’t read the news as of late: we’re not going anywhere, the current president isn’t bringing anyone home.
If fact—the schedule of deployments over the next 3 years is already out and circulating….the so-called promise of the current president is of no consequence.
Our job that we signed on to do will continue.

Doc! May the Angels of God and Mercy sit upon your shoulders, whispering prayers of protection and health to keep you and those around you safe in your upcoming rotation. :)

  6. catchero9 says:

Well I guess its time for America To stand up and tell those stupid congressmen and women to tell this president to make a decision on more troops or bring them home here we have another 14 gone and he says he is not going to rush a dicision,he doesnt want to put more troops in harms way well hell I understand that but what about the troops that are already in harms way?I sure hope this country does not come under another attack like 911 because this president would leave us hanging he has no clue, and could care less about the men and women he is leaving in harms way while he takes his sweet time making a decision.
