(My predecessor, Mike Gilbert, had a fine idea: Highlight local service members who are doing noteworthy stuff, no matter the branch or duty station. So I’m hoping to return the “People in the Service” series. All but one of this first batch comes from the Armed Forces News Service hometown releases.

West Point cadet Elizabeth Betterbed of Fox Island is one of 10 finalists for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award in the women’s soccer division. The senior plays midfield for Army. Betterbed is the lone Patriot League representative and one of two midfielders on the ballot.

Jonathan P. Gray of Beavercreek, Ohio, graduated from the Army ROTC Leader Development and Assessment Course at Fort Lewis. His father, Herbert P. Gray Jr., lives on Anderson Island.

Army Pvt. Brett M. Coleman of Yelm graduated from the Infantryman One Station Unit Training at Fort Benning, Ga. The training consists of Basic Infantry Training and Advanced Individual Training. Coleman is a 2008 graduate of Yelm High School.

Airman 1st Class Amanda M. Terry of Tacoma has graduated from the Air Traffic Control Operations Apprentice Course at Keesler Air Force Base, Miss. The course is designed to train students to control en route and terminal air traffic by use of visual, radar, and non-radar means at air traffic control tower facilities. Terry is a 2005 graduate of Tacoma’s Stadium High School.

Antonio R. Crawford of Puyallup graduated from the Army ROTC Leader Development and Assessment Course at Fort Lewis. Crawford is a student at Central Washington University in Ellensburg.

Erin M. Densmore of Tacoma graduated from the Army ROTC Leader Development and Assessment Course at Fort Lewis. Densmore is a student at Pacific Lutheran University in Parkland.

Lt. Isaac B. Putnam of Eatonville has been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army after successfully completing the Army ROTC program and graduating with a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Military Institute. Putnam is a 2003 graduate of Eatonville High School. He is assigned to the 1st Fighter Wing, Langley Air Force Base, Hampton, Va.

Army Pfc. Eric R. Daniel of Graham graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Ga. Daniel is a 2009 graduate of Graham-Kapowsin High School.

Army Reserve Pfc. Marty K. Roper of Spanaway graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, S.C. Roper is a 2008 graduate of Spanaway Lake High School, Spanaway.

Army Pfc. Justin H. Munn of Yelm graduated from One Station Unit Training (OSUT) at the U.S. Army Infantry School, Fort Benning, Ga. He is a 2009 graduate of Yelm High School.

    Betterbed is also first in her class at West Point and No. 2 in command of the 4,400-person Corps of Cadets.
