The members of a Lakewood Mormon church will hold a memorial service for Fort Lewis soldier who was killed in southern Afghanistan.

Capt. Cory J. Jenkins and three other members of 5th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division were killed Aug. 25 when a bomb detonated underneath their Stryker. A memorial honoring Jenkins will take place at 7 p.m. Friday at the Lakewood Stake Center at 10018 Farwest Dr. SW.

The event is open to the public.

Jenkins, a 30-year-old Arizona native, was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served as a scoutmaster in his LDS church ward, graduated from Brigham Young University and had served as a missionary in Russia, according to the Deseret News.
