The Los Angeles Times has Alexandra Zavis on the story, who quotes Arrowhead boss Col. Steve Townsend thusly:
“There ain’t no capital of the Islamic State of Iraq anymore,” Townsend told reporters Monday at a base on the city’s northern outskirts
The Washington Post’s Joshua Partlow is in with a longer story from the block-by-block clearing operation that 3rd Brigade troops are conducting in western Baqouba. He writes that:
“The city feels like a long-abandoned metropolis on a planet too close to the sun.”
Evidently we didn’t have room in the paper for Michael Gordon’s New York Times piece about what it’s like to make your way through Baqouba’s booby-trapped streets and houses with Commanche Company of the 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment. Follow the link to some excellent photos by Scott Nelson. (I could have lived without the story on A3 about the guy who sued his dry cleaner over his missing $1,000 pants, but hey, that’s just me.)
UPDATE: Well hush my mouth: looks like we’re running it on A1 Wednesday.
And Drew Brown of the Stars & Stripes has a story about the 296th Brigade Support Battalion’s humanitarian food and water mission in the cleared sections of Baqouba.
