Mosul is well-known to the wider Fort Lewis community, but it only gets a fraction of the news coverage that comes out of the Iraqi capital. So it’s hard from the outside to gauge what’s happening there.
Folks around here have a lot invested in Mosul. Fort Lewis troops have been stationed in the city since the first few days after it fell in April 2003, and most of the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Divison is there now. The soldier who died there Monday after he was shot there is the 43rd from Fort Lewis to fall in Mosul.
Our reporting team in Baghdad will be heading up that way soon.
