Honoring Joe Jackson

joe jackson photo.jpgMcChord Air Force Base already has a street named after him. Now they’re naming one of their big C-17 cargo jets for him as well.

But there are few who deserve such honors more than retired Col. Joe Jackson. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for landing his C-123 under heavy fire at Kham Duc, Vietnam, in May 1968 to rescue a three-man team of combat controllers.

Knee-jerk redaction

The Lt. Ehren Watada campaign and the Fort Lewis public affairs office released more or less the same version of Lt. Col. Mark Keith’s Article 32 investigating officer’s report, known bureaucratically as a DD Form 457.


More or less.


The Watada camp’s version skipped the first page of the four-page document, but included a complete transcript of the Aug. 17 hearing.


The Fort Lewis version included page one, but not the names of the four witnesses who testified at the hearing.


The names were redacted despite the fact the hearing was nominally open to the

Be nice to the kids

Capt. Matt James


On the 3rd Brigade’s last trip to Iraq, Capt. Matt James was a fire support officer with the brigade commander, Col. Mike Rounds, and spent his days driving all over northern Iraq as part of the boss’s team. (Read about now-Brig. Gen. Rounds’ new job here.)



This time, James is commanding a company in the 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment – a job any captain would prefer.
