Wednesday’s line-ups, official game notes and updated stats vs. the Oakland A’s

As expected, Nick Franklin is out of the line-up after needing five stitches in his knee last night.

Acting manager Robby Thompson said he hopes that Franklin will be back for Friday or Saturday’s games Seattle. The issue isn’t the stitches. Mariners trainers assured him that Franklin would be able to play with them. They could protect the stitches with padding.

“Obviously, it’s going to have to be protected pretty well,” Thompson said.

However, the pain in Franklin’s knee is more of the issue.

“It’s pretty sore,” Franklin said.

When it came to replacing Franklin at

Monday’s line-ups, pregame info, official game notes, updated stats vs. the Oakland A’s

It appears that Eric Wedge will be back in the dugout and leading the Seattle Mariners this weekend.

Last week in Tampa, acting manager Robby Thompson and general manager Jack Zduriencik both said there was a strong possibility that the Mariners manager could return to his position during the upcoming six-day, six-game home stand that starts Friday against the Los Angeles Angels.

On Monday, Thompson was even a little more definitive saying Wedge will “be back on Friday.”

“He’s champing at the bit,” Thompson said.

Thompson did not say whether Wedge would be back managing in a

Mariners 2, Brewers 0 — Felix Hernandez puts a stop to the losing

Felix Hernandez wasn’t going to let it continue. The Mariners’ losing, the Brewers’ hitting and his personal run of winless starts were going to come to an end, and they were going to end on Sunday.

The Mariners ace did what all staff aces are expected to do, giving his team a brilliant outing and leading it to a much-needed 2-0 win over Milwaukee at Safeco Field. The win helped Seattle

Friday’s starting line-ups, official game notes, updated stats vs. the Brewers

While the Mariners’ line-up is far from a murderer’s row, the Brewers ‘ line-up is just, um, well, wow. It’s not good. Our old friend Yuniesky Betancourt is back in Seattle and playing first base. The Brewers lost Corey Hart early in the season to an injury. They lost Ryan Braun to selfishness and just the other day Rickie Weeks was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Speaking of the disabled list, Franklin Gutierrez is going to remain there for the time being. The Mariners are trying to get him another 20-day rehab stint with the Rainiers. His last

Wilhelmsen loses his closing job for the second time this season

If and when the Seattle Mariners find themselves in another save situation, Tom Wilhelmsen won’t be taking the mound for them to secure the win.

For the second time this season, Wilhelmsen has lost his closing job.

Acting manager Robby Thompson met with pitching coach Carl Willis before Friday’s game in Baltimore and made the decision to try someone other than Wilhelmsen in save situations.

“As of right now, maybe like we’ve done in the past, we’ll try to piece it together and match up,” Thompson said. “And we’ll go from there.”

Wilhelmsen was called on

Thursdy’s line-ups, official game notes, updated stats vs. the Red Sox

After a 5-hour, 15-inning game, the Mariners line-up looks a little different. Acting manager Robby Thompson decided to rest 41-year-old Raul Ibanez, who played all 15 innings last night.

“He said he felt great and was ready to go,” Thompson said.  ”But I think the smart thing was to give him a day. We’re going to get in late tonight and early morning and he’ll be back in there tomorrow. But we have to be smart with him. He is in great shape and he’s rarin’ to go and it’s hard to keep him out of there, but I think

The postgame hopes that the injury to  Mike Zunino’s left wrist wasn’t serious were crushed on Friday afternoon, much like the bone in his wrist.

After a MRI on Friday morning, Zunino was diagnosed with a broken hamate bone in the wrist. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

The corresponding roster move has yet to be announced. But according to a source within the Mariners’ organization, it will be veteran Humberto Quintero, who was designated for assignment by the Phillies two days ago.

Mariners 10-1 loss to Cleveland Indians a double-dose of bad news

Seattle Mariners: Hottest team in baseball.

That news lasted until Wednesday afternoon. The unstoppable force that was the Mariners into All-Star weekend and five games into the second half of the season was rocked to a halt in a 10-1 old-fashioned romp at the hands of the visiting Cleveland Indians.

Then the worse news.

Manager Eric Wedge’s “dizzy spell” before Monday’s series opener that kept him in the hospital two nights was revealed by the organization to be a minor stroke. Far more serious than at first thought, but at least by Wednesday afternoon he was back home.

“Not
