Friday’s line-ups, official game notes and updated stats vs. the St. Louis Cardinals

The Mariners open a 10-game, 10-day road trip tonight starting with a three-game series against the Cardinals. And if that isn’t tough enough, they face the Tigers for four games. Both teams are vying for their division titles. So these games won’t be easy for the Mariners, who just got swept at home by the Astros.

“You are playing two of the best teams, if not the two best teams, in all of baseball in their backyards in the middle of September,” Mariners manager Eric Wedge said. “It’s going to be a great atmosphere, a great challenge for our

Rangers 8, Mariners 3: The right decision, but the wrong result

The thinking behind the decision was right. The execution was fine. And the result?

Well, that pretty much cemented a loss for the Seattle Mariners on Monday night at Safeco Field.

With the Mariners trailing 4-3 in the top of the seventh inning,  manager Eric Wedge had pitcher Joe Saunders intentionally walk the white hot-hitting Adrian Beltre with two outs and a runner on second and first base open.

“It’s the right thing to do there,” Wedge said. “If you have a chance to pitch around Beltre you are going to do it, if he’s not the hottest hitter in

Indians 10, Mariners 8 – “We are just happy to be leaving Cleveland”

CLEVELAND – Tom Wilhelmsen pretty much summed up the thoughts of the Seattle Mariners and their fans in minutes after yet another stunning walk-off loss to the Cleveland Indians.

“We’re just happy to be leaving Cleveland,” he said flatly. “We are ready to leave this place.”

After four days and four losses – three coming on the final swing of the bat – the Mariners have taken enough punches to the gut in this city to last 10 seasons.

Monday’s 10-8 loss in 10 innings might have been the most painful.

Sunday’s line-ups, official game notes, updated stats vs. the Indians, and a few thoughts on Montero’s play at the plate

Michael Saunders is back in the line-up today after getting  much needed day off. The rest of the line-up is pretty similar to yesterday. Jesus Montero is back in there after a tough game yesterday.

I watched yesterday’s final play with Montero at the plate several times yesterday. Yes, he stretched with the wrong foot. Yes, he looked awkward. Is it a routine play? No. Routine plays are something that happen often. Asking a catcher to act like a first baseman at home and field a

Position preview: Can Kyle Seager improve on his breakout year?

Call it a surprise. Call it a breakthrough. But Kyle Seager isn’t about to let you call his 2012 season with the Seattle Mariners an aberration.

After starting the season as a platoon player, he took away the third base job from a flailing Chone Figgins and made it his own – and became probably the team’s best hitter in the process.

But don’t think for a second that Seager has rested on his accomplishments during the offseason. That has never been his way. And it never will be. He knows he can’t simply rely on his talent because he’s

Radio wrap-up: Lots of interviews from yesterday – Wedge, Zduriencik and Seager

Plenty of radio interviews after yesterday’s Mariners pre-spring training luncheon. So I figured I’d combine them all into one big blog post. I will start with my interview yesterday on KJR. Why? Because I love me some me.

Radio interviews with Eric Wedge and Jack Zduriencik after the jump
