Mariners line-up vs. the Angels

Here’s the line-up for today’s game against the Angels. It will be a big day for Jeremy Bonderman as he is scheduled to pitch four innings. People have mentioned on Twitter about Franklin Gutierrez’s absence in the lineup the past few days. He last played on March 9. We talked to Gutierrez, who said he has some stiffness in his legs. The Mariners decided to give him a break from games, but he’s still been at the complex every day taking BP and doing his normal work.

Mariners split their split squad games: Stefen Romero has himself a day

The facts

The Mariners continued score runs and blast the ball over the fence. Seattle got two home runs from prospect Stefen Romero and another from Casper Wells in the win. The Mariners also got outstanding pitching, limiting the Royals to two runs on seven hits and struck out eight batters

Stefen Romero blew open a 1-1 game in the fourth inning, ripping 2-0 fastball from Guillermo Moscoso over the wall in left field for a grand slam (above).  That was the biggest hit

Wedge says Smoak will get ‘bulk’ of time at first, Morales at DH

Mariners manager Eric Wedge said today the plan is for Justin Smoak to get the bulk of time at first base and Kendrys Morales to get the same at DH this season. Wedge said how spring training goes is a factor in determining how their time will be split/spent, but that it would take something “drastic” in order for that approach to the change.

Smoak, Rainiers struggle. Tuesday’s game thread

The Tacoma Rainiers were shutout by the New Orleans Zephyrs 2-0 on Tuesday for their second straight loss. They had plenty of opportunities to push runs across the plate, but capitalized on none of them.

Justin Smoak had an especially rough night as he was thrown out at third on a play that would have scored Guillermo Quiroz and later robbed of what might have been his first home run with the Rainiers since his demotion from Seattle on July 24.

Smoak searching for confidence in Triple-A

Justin Smoak certainly didn’t want his locker moving 36 miles south of Safeco Field to Tacoma’s Cheney Stadium, but the Seattle Mariners are hoping it’s what he needs to build some confidence after batting .189 in 90 games this year.

Tacoma Rainiers manager Daren Brown spoke with Smoak when he arrived in Tacoma today and made clear what is expected of him.
