The Mariners head into Sunday’s final game of the series with Oakland with a different lineup.

Manager Eric Wedge has moved Kyle Seager into the No. 3 spot and bumped both Kendrys Morales and Michael Morse down a spot to fourth and fifth, respectively.

Ackley, Ryan will be held out this weekend

After offseason arthroscopic surgeries to remove bone spurs, second baseman Dustin Ackley and shortstop Brendan Ryan will be held out of the first three spring training games.

“We’re just going to give them a little more time,” manager Eric Wedge said. “They’re practicing well and doing a nice job, but I think it’s important just to give them a little more time.”

Ackley had bone spurs removed from his ankle and Ryan had loose bodies extracted from his throwing elbow.

Brendan Ryan believes there’s more to him as a shortstop than just defense. Of course, Ryan’s defense is far from ordinary. It’s extraordinarily good, like best in the league-level good. And yet, as good as Ryan is with the glove, it’s difficult for management and fans to overlook or digest an every day player, who is hitting under .200.

Of course, Ryan doesn’t think a .194 batting average is acceptable either. He knows that being a productive major league player means to have some semblance of consistency and contribution level at the plate.

With the major league baseball deadline looming for teams to tender (offer) contracts to players on their 40-man roster, who had not already been signed for 2013 season, the Seattle Mariners did a little roster maintenance on Friday evening.

Seattle tendered contracts to four players – catcher John Jaso, pitchers Shawn Kelley and Jason Vargas and shortstop Brendan Ryan – who were all arbitration eligible for the upcoming season.
