Satuday’s line-ups, pregame notes, official game notes, updated stats vs. the Texas Rangers

Nick Franklin is out of the line-up today. He’s been struggling mightily at the plate and in the field. Since July 9, there are his numbers …

To quote former Mariners beat writer Larry LaRue: Yikes!

“Nick has a day off today,” acting manager Robby Thompson said pregame. “We’ll give Nick a little rest and a little work day. He’s been struggling lately, but he’s struggling even more so from the right side.”

So Franklin gets a work day today, which isn’t a bad thing. He put in quite a bit of fielding work

Mariners 2, Brewers 0 — Felix Hernandez puts a stop to the losing

Felix Hernandez wasn’t going to let it continue. The Mariners’ losing, the Brewers’ hitting and his personal run of winless starts were going to come to an end, and they were going to end on Sunday.

The Mariners ace did what all staff aces are expected to do, giving his team a brilliant outing and leading it to a much-needed 2-0 win over Milwaukee at Safeco Field. The win helped Seattle

Mariners Eric Wedge suffered mild stroke

A “dizzy spell” that forced Seattle Mariners manager Eric Wedge to miss the past three games against the Cleveland Indians and spend two nights in the hospital was revealed to be a mild stroke, the organization announced following Wednesday’s 10-1 loss.

Wedge was back at his home Wednesday afternoon and the team said he is doing well, but general manager Jack Zduriencik said he will stay home for the team’s upcoming four-game series with the Minnesota Twins as well as the ensuing road trip to Boston and Baltimore.

“We expect a complete recovery,” Zduriencik said during a press conference following

Position preview: Can Brendan Ryan find any offense to go with his stellar defense at shortstop?

Brendan Ryan believes there’s more to him as a shortstop than just defense. Of course, Ryan’s defense is far from ordinary. It’s extraordinarily good, like best in the league-level good. And yet, as good as Ryan is with the glove, it’s difficult for management and fans to overlook or digest an every day player, who is hitting under .200.

Of course, Ryan doesn’t think a .194 batting average is acceptable either. He knows that being a productive major league player means to have some semblance of consistency and contribution level at the plate.

Going into 2013 season, he will try

Roster moves: Mariners agree to contracts with Andino, Kinney, tender offers to four other players

With the major league baseball deadline looming for teams to tender (offer) contracts to players on their 40-man roster, who had not already been signed for 2013 season, the Seattle Mariners did a little roster maintenance on Friday evening.

Seattle tendered contracts to four players – catcher John Jaso, pitchers Shawn Kelley and Jason Vargas and shortstop Brendan Ryan – who were all arbitration eligible for the upcoming season. The Mariners now can and the four players can agree on a contract for the upcoming season, or the players can wait for arbitration, where their salary is determined by a
