Rainiers transaction madhouse

Tacoma Rainiers manager Roy Howell has been a popular guy lately.

His phone has been ringing almost off the hook the past five days. It’s his clubhouse phone, but all the same – he’s got what the Seattle Mariners want.

The Rainiers have undergone 22 official transactions since the start of the season (15 days ago). Fourteen have occurred the past five days.

“That’s why we’ve talked about how it’s very important for me and this staff to have these guys ready when the phone rings,” Howell said. “And lately it’s been ringing a lot.”

Want to replace Aaron Harang? Well here’s the candidates

Following another less than stellar outing on August 7 against the Toronto Blue Jays where Aaron Harang never made it out of the third inning and gave up seven runs on five hits with three walks, acting manager Robby Thompson was asked if the veteran right-hander would remain in the starting rotation.

Thompson replied: “I can’t answer that right now. As far as I’m concerned, he’s still in the rotation.”

Barring an unexpected change in the next few days, Harang will start for the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday at Tropicana Field against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Position preview: The starting rotation is Felix Hernandez and friends …

Elbow issues or not, contract extension or not, the Mariners’ starting rotation still begins and ends with Felix Hernandez.

The 2010 Cy Young winner is the rock of the rotation. And maybe four other teams in baseball have a pitcher of his caliber to lead their rotation.

“Obviously, it all starts with Felix,” Mariners manager Eric Wedge said.

But beyond Felix, the Mariners’ pitching rotation is far from dominant. Many of the candidates are unproven.
