Change is coming: Mariners to send down Jesus Montero to Tacoma, bring up Jesus Sucre

UPDATE: The Mariners announced the roster move of sending Jesus Montero to Tacoma, but did not announce any corresponding roster moves yet. They will do so tomorrow.

On the heels of a six-game losing streak and a 2-7 road trip, the Seattle Mariners will make an expected and needed roster move sometime today.

Catcher Jesus Montero will be sent to Triple-A Tacoma, while catcher Jesus Sucre will be selected from the Rainiers. Double-A back-up catcher Brandon Bantz, who was serving as the starter in Jackson after John Hicks suffered a groin injury and went on the DL, is already headed

Angels 7, Mariners 1 — Veterans call a players-only meeting after sixth straight loss

If the Seattle Mariners were happy to be leaving Cleveland after losing four straight games – three in walk-off fashion, then they should feel ecstatic leaving Anaheim and putting it behind them.

It was only a brief two-game series against the American League West-rival Angels, but it felt so much longer.

For the second straight day, the Mariners were done in shortly after the game started, getting another short and underwhelming starting pitching performance and doing little afterward in a 7-1 loss at Angels Stadium

It was the Mariners’ sixth-straight loss. And all the good feelings

Wednesday’s line-ups, official game notes, Wedge video vs. the Angels

The video above Wedge talks about Seager just needed a day off and using the off day to basically get him two off days. Though I’m pretty certain that if Ryan or Andino comes up in a meaningful spot, he will be pinch hitting.

Michael Saunders has struggled of late.

Wedge thinks Saunders is expanding his strikezone and swinging at pitches out of that area.

  • Michael Morse is batting 3rd for the first time this season (cleanup –

Angels 12, Mariners 0 — a flat pummeling

Well, at least the Seattle Mariners didn’t lose on walk-off hit. In a quest for optimism, that might be the only one on Tuesday night at Angels Stadium.

Then again, maybe it’s not quite as positive as it seems. After all, losing on a walk-off hit to an opponent implies that you have a chance to win the game.

About an inning into Tuesday night’s 12-0 loss to the Los Angeles Angels, the Mariners victory hopes were slim, and two innings later they were nonexistent.

Seattle starter Aaron Harang had another forgettable outing in a tenure

Tuesday’s line-ups, official game notes and updated stats vs. Angels

With righty Jerome Williams on the mound, Wedge has Raul  Ibanez going in left field over Bay. Wedge is still rolling out that trio of lefties at the top. The Angels only have one lefty in the bullpen – Scott Downs. Update: make that two lefties as Sean Burnett was activated from the DL.

Only Ackley, Saunders, Smoak and Ryan have more than 10 at-bats against Williams.

The Mariners clubhouse was pretty loose with lots of people coming and going. And the players seem to have no ill effects from the rough weekend in Cleveland. Like

Mariners Minor League Report, May 21, 2013: Beavan pitches well, Peguero homers in Rainiers win

Blake Beavan had a solid outing, pitching 7 2/3 innings and allowing one run on four hits. Carlos Peguero (above) and Alex Liddi homered  in a 5-2 win for the Rainiers over the Nashville Sounds.

John McGrath was at the game on Sunday and filed this column on Nate Tenbrink, who has been a hitting machine for the Rainiers this season. Never heard of him? Well, he was considered  a nice prospect until injuries derailed him.

Double A Jackson picked up a 7-1 win over Birmingham.

Class A High Desert gave up

Indians 10, Mariners 8 – “We are just happy to be leaving Cleveland”

CLEVELAND – Tom Wilhelmsen pretty much summed up the thoughts of the Seattle Mariners and their fans in minutes after yet another stunning walk-off loss to the Cleveland Indians.

“We’re just happy to be leaving Cleveland,” he said flatly. “We are ready to leave this place.”

After four days and four losses – three coming on the final swing of the bat – the Mariners have taken enough punches to the gut in this city to last 10 seasons.

Monday’s 10-8 loss in 10 innings might have been the most painful.

Mariners minor league report, May 20, 2013: Triunfel hits a walk-off homer for Tacoma, another strong outing for lefty Tyler Pike

Sunday was a featured day for pitching in the Mariners organization as three of their better pitching prospects took the mound in starts – James Paxton (Tacoma), Taijuan Walker (Jackson) and Tyler Pike (Clinton).

Of the three, Pike had the best day, throwing six scoreless innings, allowing one hit, but walking five and striking out two in Clinton’s 5-2 win.

In Tacoma, Paxton made it just 4 2/3 innings and needed 98 pitches to make that far. He gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits, with three strikeouts and no walks.
