Mike Zunino placed on the 15-day disabled list with a broken hamate bone

The postgame hopes that the injury to  Mike Zunino’s left wrist wasn’t serious were crushed on Friday afternoon, much like the bone in his wrist.

After a MRI on Friday morning, Zunino was diagnosed with a broken hamate bone in the wrist. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

The corresponding roster move has yet to be announced. But according to a source within the Mariners’ organization, it will be veteran Humberto Quintero, who was designated for assignment by the Phillies two days ago.

Noesi, LaFromboise recalled; Beavan sent to Tacoma, Ramirez to Everett

The Mariners did some pitching staff shuffling Friday when Hector Noesi and Bobby LaFromboise were recalled from Tacoma and Blake Beavan was sent to the Rainiers. Thursday’s starter, Erasmo Ramirez, was sent to short-A Everett. That will allow him to make his next start on regular rest over the All-Star break and give the Mariners a chance to recall him right after the break, too.

Mariners release catcher Kelly Shoppach

The  Mariners have placed catcher Kelly Shoppach on waivers for the purpose of granting his unconditional release.

Shoppach, 33, was designated for assignment on June 14 when the Mariners signed free agent catcher Henry Blanco. He hit .196 (21×107) in 35 games with the Mariners this season with 7 doubles, 3 home runs and 9 RBI with 12 walks and 45 strikeouts.

Even if Shoppach had cleared waivers, he could and likely would refuse a minor league assignment if the Mariners tried to outright him. Realistically, the Mariners were ready to part ways with the veteran catcher.

There were kind of different responses from general manager Jack Zduriencik and manager Eric Wedge.

“He’s played down there and all of us feel strongly this guy was going to be here at some point in time,” Zduriencik said. “We had a little bit of a later target date, but when you look at we had an injury right now, there’s no harm in bringing him up. Let’s see where we’re at. The move

Mariners sent Triunfel down, bring Bantz up to catch

The Mariners made several moves this morning, in the wake of catcher Jesus Sucre’s injury suffered yesterday.

Here’s the word from manager Eric Wedge:

We’re hoping it’s a three or four day deal, so that’s good news. We’ve got Brandon Bantz up here. If Sucre is going to be down we’ve got to have somebody that can play. We sent down Carlos Triunfel down this morning after we got the news on Sucre. So we’re a little bit thin, but we’re doing what we have to do. It’s part of the big-league season.

Why Bantz, rather than, say, Mike Zunino?
