Iwakuma “back in game mode again” after 56 pitches in first rehab start in Single-A Everett

Hisashi Iwakuma took a big step toward rejoining the Mariners’ rotation, tossing 56 pitches over 3 2/3 innings in his first rehab start for Single-A Everett on Saturday night at Everett Memorial Stadium against the Eugene Emeralds, the Single-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs.

“For the first time in a long time,” Iwakuma said before Sunday’s game against the Astros through interpreter Antony Suzuki, “(I felt) back in game mode again. I still need to work on timing and mechanics. Other than that, I felt good.”

Of Iwakuma’s 56 pitches, 41 were for strikes. He allowed one run — a

Roster moves: Taijuan Walker, Abraham Almonte selected from Tacoma, Erasmo Ramirez optioned to Tacoma

Now before everyone freaks out at the headline, Erasmo Ramirez will still make his start on Tuesday in Kansas City. This is a paper move to bring up Abraham Almonte. Big league rosters expand to 40 on Sunday, so the Mariners will bring back Ramirez on Sunday. Actually, I don’t even think he will leave the team.

Obviously, Walker replaces Michael Morse, who was traded earlier today, on the 25-man roster. Almonte will replace Ramirez.

Almonte, who the Mariners acquired from the Yankees for pitcher Shawn Kelley,  earned this promotion. He was the Rainiers best player the second half

Mariners make four roster moves … and Robby Thompson explains them

The Seattle Mariners, who play Toronto at 7:10 tonight at Safeco Field, have announced three roster moves, listed below with comments from acting manager Robby Thompson:

* Right-handed pitcher Tom Wilhelmsen has been optioned to the Tacoma Rainiers.

Thompson: “We wanted him to go back down and regain his confidence, pinpoint that fastball – of having precise command with it like he’s had in the past, so his secondary stuff can work off of that instead of trying go to that to throw a strike or get them to swing at pitches out of the zone or if he’s behind

Zduriencik: Stephen Pryor shut down for the season, Wedge won’t return next week

Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik announced that hard-throwing reliever Stephen Pryor is being shut down for the season with an injury to his triceps muscle.

Pryor, who has been on some form of the disabled list since April 15 with a torn lat muscle, was rehabbing the injury with Triple A Tacoma when he felt pain in the triceps of his throwing arm while warming up on Friday. They scratched him from his outing. He had magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on the arm on Saturday and Mariners team doctor Edward Khalfayan and the training staff reviewed the results.

“They didn’t

Mariners recall Michael Morse, Jason Bay designated for assignment

The Seattle Mariners are getting a little power back in their line-up.

On Monday, the team activated outfielder Michael Morse from the 15-day disabled list. He will join the team on Tuesday in Boston at the start of a six-game road trip that includes a stop in Baltimore.

To make room on the roster, outfielder JasonBay was designated for assignment.

Bay was the casualty of a crowded outfield with Dustin Ackley converting to the position from second base. Either Bay or Endy Chavez – both on one-year contracts – was the likely candidate to be designated with the Morse coming
