This will be the 135th different line-up for Eric Wedge this season. Does that mean anything really other than they used a lot of line-ups? Well, It means they’ve had some injuries, used some platoons and a lot of roster turnover. Also when you aren’t very good, you have lots of line-ups. You tend to experiment and try different combinations. And the Mariners aren’t very good. Is having the same line-up most days a good thing? Yes, when you have good, consistent players. It’s easy for Jim Leyland to write out the top five guys in his …
The Tacoma Rainiers still have a chance of making the playoffs.
It’s just an exceptionally improbable one.
That’s because the Rainiers 8-6 loss in a 13-inning bout against Pacific Coast League northern division-leader Salt Lake on Wednesday puts Tacoma four games back of the Bees with five games left.
But this might as well have been the Rainiers season-finale, considering how inconceivable their postseason probability became.
It took five hours and seven minutes to end the 13-inning contest Wednesday (actually, Thursday by the time it was over). The teams combined to use 13 pitchers – the game-winning one, Bees reliever …
The Tacoma Rainiers start Hector Noesi (3-2, 6-75 ERA) in the fourth of five games in this home series against the Colorado Springs Sky Sox.
With both Scott Savastano (torso strain) and Rich Poythress (left knee) going to the disabled list, the Rainiers post an even further depleted lineup. The most recognizable names in for tonight’s game are Carlos Peguero in right and Carlos Triunfel at shortstop.
But there is another you should get to know – Abraham Almonte.
Almonte started the season in Double-A Jackson, but since then has been one of the most stable players on the …
The Mariners did some pitching staff shuffling Friday when Hector Noesi and Bobby LaFromboise were recalled from Tacoma and Blake Beavan was sent to the Rainiers. Thursday’s starter, Erasmo Ramirez, was sent to short-A Everett. That will allow him to make his next start on regular rest over the All-Star break and give the Mariners a chance to recall him right after the break, too.
Tacoma starter Taijuan Walker, who has been dominant since arriving, has moved to No. 7 on Baseball America’s top 50 midseason prospects list.
Left-hander Danny Hultzen was scratched from his start on Tuesday night at Cheney Stadium by the Rainiers’ coaching staff for precautionary reasons after struggling to get loose pregame.
This definitely concerning for the Mariners since Hultzen had the same thing happen to him in April and he was shut down with a strained rotator cuff. He missed almost two months of the season.
There is no word yet to the extend of Hultzen’s issue. This would have been his second start since returning from the injury. On Thursday, he looked solid pitching six scoreless innings for the Rainiers.
Grant Clark …
The Mariners have promoted pitching prospect Taijuan Walker to Triple-A Tacoma.
