Montgomery delivers one-hit gem in Mariners’ 5-0 victory over Padres

SAN DIEGO — Rookie left-hander Mike Montgomery continues emerge as a bright counterpoint to what, for the Seattle Mariners, remains a disappointing and underachieving season.

Montgomery carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning Tuesday night before settling for a one-hitter and a 5-0 victory over the San Diego Padres at Petco Park.

“It’s pretty easy to sum up,” manager Lloyd McClendon said. “This kid was outstanding. He’s shown a lot of poise. I had no idea of what to expect when we first got him. Each and every outing, he impresses me even more.”

The Mariners backed Montgomery with homers by

Mariners notebook: Cruz says he turned down chance to participate in Home Run Derby

SAN DIEGO — Nelson Cruz is hoping to attend the Home Run Derby at this year’s All-Star Game…as a spectator.

The Seattle Mariners’ slugger confirmed Tuesday that he turned down an invitation to participate in the July 13 spectacle at Great American Ball Park in Cincinnati, which takes place one night prior to the All-Star Game.

“I would love to do it,” Cruz said, “but at the same time, I have to think about my teammates and the team. If I (participate), it can wear me out for two or three days.

“It’s not fair for the team, and it’s not

Mariners face decision on rotation as Iwakuma nears return

SAN DIEGO — It’s about to get crowded in the Seattle Mariners’ rotation — assuming right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma has no problems Tuesday night in his scheduled rehab start for Triple-A Tacoma at Cheney Stadium.

Iwakuma is slotted for six innings and 90 pitches in what will be his third rehab start in his ongoing recovery from a strained back muscle suffered April 21 in a routine day-after throwing session following his April 20 start.

That positions Iwakuma, who won 38 games over the three previous seasons, to rejoin the rotation Sunday in Oakland for the final game of the Mariners’ nine-game

Mariners’ bullpen stumbles over closing innings in 3-2 loss to Angels

ANAHEIM, Calif. — An inability to close out a series with a victory continues to cripple the Seattle Mariners’ ability to gain any traction or sustained success.

This one, though, was particularly gut-wrenching: a 3-2 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on a walk-out wild pitch in the 10th inning Sunday at Angel Stadium.

Tom Wilhelmsen had just positioned himself to escape a bases-loaded jam with no outs by getting Albert Pujols to ground into a short-home-first double play.

But…Wilhelmsen then buried a 2-2 changeup to Kyle Kubitza that got through catcher Mike Zunino and permitted Kole Calhoun to score from

Mariners notebook: Cano back in lineup one day after getting beaned

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Second baseman Robinson Cano returned Sunday to the Seattle Mariners’ lineup after exiting Saturday’s game when hit in the forehead by an errant infield throw.

“I’m good,” Cano said prior to the game. “No headaches. It just hurts right here (pointing to the spot), but no headaches. Thank God, he didn’t hit me in the eyes.”

A throw by Los Angeles shortstop Taylor Featherston in warmups drills prior to the seventh inning sailed into the Mariners’ dugout and struck Cano on the left side of his forehead.

The ball hit with sufficient impact to ricochet back to first
