SAN DIEGO — The latest name on the Mariners’ radar could be an old trade target: Chicago White Sox outfielder Dayan Viciedo.

Sources say the Mariners are showing increased interest in Viciedo as an alternative to fill their quest to obtain a right-handed power hitter to play right field.

The possible turn toward Viciedo, 25, comes as negotiations with free-agent Melky Cabrera appear stalled.

The Mariners also seem unable to persuade the Los Angeles Dodgers to relent on an insistence that either right-hander Taijuan Walker or lefty James Paxton be included in a deal for outfielder Matt Kemp.

USA Today reported earlier Tuesday that the White Sox are shopping Viciedo. Mariners general manager Jack Zduriencik later indicated a willingness to seek alternatives to higher-priced options.

“I think we have enough room right now where we can make a reasonable addition,” Zduriencik said. “The high-profile, upper-echelon dollars, we’re not going to be in that market. It’s just not going to happen.

“But I do think we have room to make a move that will help the club.”

Viciedo represents such an option after batting .231 last season with 21 homers and 58 RBIs in 145 games. He is eligible for arbitration after making $2.8 million in 2014 but would be under club control for three seasons.

The Mariners showed interest in Viciedo at times in the past, including last July prior to the trade deadline.

  1. If the cost is just Erasmo, maybe. But … nothing much to get excited about.

Dump Saunders and then tade for a 230 ‘slugger’ giving up who knows who? Absurd, but with Jack Z anything is possible.

Interesting that the White Sox now have snagged our right field target. There is no better way to force somebodies hand then stealing the top target from under us. Now we have a glaring need and they suddenly have an expendable outfielder.

I just worry about why Chicago is hell bent on trading this guy? His salary is low, he’s only 25 and 3 years of club control? Seems odd they are shopping him but maybe it’s simply his fit in their current lineup. I know jack z seems to covet this guy so I am feeling something brewing. I just hope they aren’t asking for too much and hopefully it’s a Ramirez and bullpen arm like Maurer deal that doesn’t break us and it fills both teams needs. Time will tell but I know we need somebody now or they would have never moved Saunders without a plan and not an experiment. Jack z hasn’t felt nothing yet, if he misses badly now with these long term commitments and we implode it’s hasta la vista.
