SEATTLE — The Mariners are showing interest in Pittsburgh outfielder Starling Marte, according to a report in the Beaver County (Pa.) Times.

The report also said it’s “unclear if the Pirates are willing to part with their left fielder after signing him to a five-year, $31-million contract in spring training.”

The Pirates have a surplus of outfielders — they recently optioned Jose Tabata to Triple-A Indianapolis. The report also says they are interested in right-hander pitcher Taijuan Walker and two Tacoma infielders, Nick Franklin and Chris Taylor.

Marte, 25, would, potentially, fill the Mariners’ need for an impact right-handed bat, although he is having a disappointing season: a .255/.328/.385 slash (batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage.)

He has five homers and 34 RBIs in 86 games. Some attribute his disappointing season to dealing with the deaths of a close friend and his mother-in-law.

  1. AZBubba71 says:

As long as deal doesn’t include Walker, Peterson, Zunino, or Jones…I’m ok with it.

Skeptical of any NL player moving into the AL, though. It seems like they mostly struggle offensively…and this is a guy currently batting .254 in the NL.

Trade Ackley, Smoak, Hultzen, Taylor (reluctant to do that), Franklin (YES), Pryor, etc.

Realistically, we should be patient and wait for Peterson to take Smoak’s job, Jackson to take Ackley’s, and maybe Montero develops into the full time DH.

  2. I agree.
This might be a good deal now with some upside that doesn’t blow 2015 and 2016.
    Marte’s numbers are an upgrade on Ackley’s (.239 .291 .352).
But I definitely wouldn’t give up Walker or Peterson.
