Mariners ace Felix Hernandez will get the “honor” he coveted when he starts Tuesday for the American League in the All-Star Game at Target Field in Minneapolis.

AL manager John Farrell of the Boston Red Sox tapped Hernandez for the  duty Monday at a news conference in Minneapolis. St. Louis right-hander Adam Wainwright will start for the National League.

Farrell’s lineup also has Mariners second baseman Robinson Cano batting third. Cano is making his fifth straight All-Star start but his first since signing with the Mariners as a free agent in December 2013.

Hernandez is an All-Star for the fifth time in his career, but this marks his first starting assignment. He worked one scoreless inning in the 2009 and 2013 games as a reliever. The only other Mariners pitcher to start an All-Star Game is Randy Johnson, who drew the assignment in 1995 and 1997.

It isn’t hard to see why Farrell chose Hernandez, who is 11-2 with a 2.12 ERA in 20 starts.

The American League lineup:

Derek Jeter, Yankees, SS
Mike Trout, Angels, LF
Robinson Cano, Mariners, 2B
Miguel Cabrera, Tigers, 1B
Jose Bautista, Blue Jays, RF
Nelson Cruz, Orioles, DH
Adam Jones, Orioles, CF
Josh Donaldson, A’s, 3B
Salvy Perez, Royals, C
Felix Hernandez, Mariners, P

The National League lineup

Andrew McCutchen, Pirates, CF
Yasiel Puig, Dodgers, RF
Troy Tulowitzki, Rockies, SS
Paul Goldschmidt, Diamondbacks, 1B
Giancarlo Stanton, Marlins, DH
Aramis Ramirez, Brewers, 3B
Chase Utley, Phillies, 2B
Jonathan Lucroy, Brewers, C
Carlos Gomez, Brewers, LF
Adam Wainwright, Cardinals, P

    Congratulations to Felix!

So here’s a trade I propose Paul Goldschmidt for Tajuan Walker, Justin Smoak and either Brandon Mauer or Dominc Leone. I might even consider both Mauer and Leone.

Trust me, NOBODY down here in Arizona would be in favor of that deal from the Diamondbacks perspective. It wouldn’t even be a consideration other than for LaRussa to tell Towers/Hall about it for a laugh.
