The Mariners appear close to a reaching agreement with veteran outfielder/first baseman Xavier Nady on a minor-league deal.

Nady, 35, chose to become a free agent earlier this month rather than accept an outright assignment by San Diego to Triple-A El Paso. He was just 5-for-37 in 22 games for the Padres prior to being designated for assignment.

The tentative plan is for Nady to report to Triple-A Tacoma in what amounts to a tryout. If productive, he would likely be summoned to the big-league club in hopes is he could provide a right-handed power bat to a lefty-heavy lineup.

Nady has slash of .268/.323/432 (batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage) with 104 homers and 410 RBIs in 961 career big-league games over 12 seasons with eight teams.

He spent last season at Triple-A in the Kansas City and Colorado systems before signing in January with the Padres as a free agent..

  1. AZBubba71 says:

I would much rather have the switch hitting Kendry Morales.

  2. They could sure use him right now. I’d guess that Cue Ball would’ve already signed him if the money had been approved.

  3. Looks like signing Cruz to a one or 2 year deal for more money than Baltimore was offering would’ve been intelligent. I know Safeco is not like Camden, but 19 hrs at this point is impressive anywhere. Maybe Cruz would’ve rather signed for one year in a good hitting park regardless of whether or not the M’s made a significantly better offer?
