Mariners trim 13 players from big-league camp roster

The Mariners marked the opening of minor-league workouts Wednesday by announcing 13 cuts from their big-league camp roster, including three players from their 40-man roster.

Left-handed pitcher Danny Hultzen was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma, where he will continue his recovery from shoulder surgery. Lefty Anthony Fernandez and outfielder Julio Morban were optioned to Double-A Jackson.

The club also reassigned 10 non-roster invites to minor-league camp, including five right-handed pitchers: Jonathan Arias, Andrew Carraway, Stephen Kohlscheen, Mark Rogers and Chance Ruffin.

Also reassigned: lefty James Gillheeney, catchers John Hicks and Manny Pina, infielder Gabriel Noriega and outfielder Burt Reynolds.

Minor-league camp opened Wednesday for pitchers and catchers. The first full minor-league workouts are March 11.

The moves leave 55 players in big-league camp, including 18 non-roster invites. Here’s the list (an asterisk denotes a non-roster invite):

Right-handed pitchers (20): Scott Baker*, Logan Bawcom, Blake Beavan, Danny Farquhar, Felix Hernandez, Hisashi Iwakuma, Logan Kensing*, Dominic Leone*, Brandon Maurer, Yoervis Medina, Zach Miner*, Hector Noesi, Matt Palmer*, Stephen Pryor, Erasmo Ramirez, Ramon Ramirez*, Fernando Rodney, Carson Smith*, Taijuan Walker and Tom Wilhelmsen.

Left-handed pitchers (8): Joe Beimel*, Roenis Elias*, Charlier Furbush, Nick Hill*, Bobby LaFromboise, Lucas Luetge, James Paxton and Randy Wolf*.

Catchers (5): John Buck, Mike Dowd*, Humberto Quintero*, Jesus Sucre and Mike Zunino.

Infielders (13): Willie Bloomquist, Robinson Cano, Ji-Man Choi, Nick Franklin, Ty Kelly*, Brad Miller, Jesus Montero, Logan Morrison, Kyle Seager, Justin Smoak, Chris Taylor*, Nate Tenbrink* and Carlos Triunfel.

Outfielders (9): Dustin Ackley, Abraham Almonte, Xavier Avery, Endy Chavez*, Cole Gillespie*, Corey Hart, James Jones, Stephen Romero and Michael Saunders.
