The facts: Outfielder James Jones, who spent most of last season at Class AA Jackson, fueled a late-inning runaway by hitting a three-run homer in the eighth before adding an RBI single in the ninth. Nick Franklin and Nate Tenbrink also hit homers in an 18-hit attack as the Mariners romped to a second straight victory over the Padres.

Play of the game: Franklin opened the scoring with a no-doubt homer to right with two outs in the third inning. He also had a single in three at-bats. Not a bad way to start his campaign to win the shortstop job.

Plus: Rookie lefty James Paxton breezed through six hitters in his two innings. He and seven relievers limited the Padres to three hits.

Minus: The Mariners put runners at second and third with no outs in the first inning but got nothing when Ty Kelly and Corey Hart struck out before Jesus Montero grounded to short.

Quotable: “Of course. I’m ready to go.” — lefty James Paxton when asked if, unlike some others, he is healthy.

Extra innings: Hart was the DH and went one for two with a walk…The Mariners led just 2-1 before scoring five times in the sixth. Tenbrink capped that burst with a two-run homer…Right-hander Carson Smith, who had a 1.80 ERA last season at Jackson, struck out the side in the eighth inning…Righty Brandon Maurer had no day-after problems from a 36-pitch bullpen session after being slowed earlier in the week by back tightness…Closer Fernando Rodney threw a 30-pitch bullpen and should face hitters on Monday.

Up next: Veteran right-hander Scott Baker, signed in the off-season to a minor-league contract, is slotted for two innings Saturday against the Angels in his bid to win a spot in the rotation. Los Angeles plans to start lefty C.J. Wilson. The game starts as 12:05 p.m. at Peoria Stadium and can be heard on 710 AM.
