A source within the organization confirmed that the Mariners are starting to interview finalists for their open managerial position.

Former Mariner and White Sox bench coach Joey Cora interviewed with the team on Friday, while Tigers hitting coach Lloyd McLendon interviewed with the team on Sunday in Seattle. A’s bench coach Chip Hale is also scheduled to interview in Seattle.

There could be more finalists for the job, but they are not known at this time.

Cora, a former Mariners infielder, did not coach this season and served as a television analyst this past season. He was Ozzie Guillen’s longtime bench coach with the White Sox and later in Miami.

McLendon is the only one of the three with big league managerial experience, having served as the Pirates manager from 2001-05.

Hale, who was finalist for the Mariners managerial job when Don Wakamatsu was hired, has managerial experience in Triple A with Tucson.

Time to pick a skipper and go shopping for either free agents or trading partners.

Oh, and an official offer to Morales and the required internal business (arbitration cases).

With Jack Z’s job seriously on the line I don’t see him picking a newbie to be the manager of a team that clearly needs a manager with experience. I expect it to be McClendon.

  3. I think all three of those sound like pretty good choices. I kind of like Little Joey Cora myself. It sounds like from talk I’ve heard from baseball people that Joey is considerd a good in game tactician. That would be something different for the Mariners. We haven’t seen that in a while, or ever.

Wasn’t Joey Cora kept on the Mariner Team well past his sell by date because the daughter of one of the owners thought he was cute. Probably one of the Nintendo bunch who are still there. If so, its a done deal.

I am hoping for Joey. I would LOVE to see him back here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Morales gets a qualifying offer. Let the countdown begin.
