CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reported that GM Jack Zduriencik interviewed Chip Hale yesterday.

Per Mariners sources, Zduriencik and Hale did meet in Phoenix. But it wasn’t necessarily a formal interview. Zduriencik is said to still be combing through an extensive list of candidates and trying to whittle it down to a workable number of finalists.

The meeting with Hale was also convenient since Zduriencik is in Arizona scouting the Arizona Fall League and Hale resides in Tucson. Hale has been a candidate all along. He interviewed for the position in 2009.

The Mariners expect that Zduriencik will have a list of final candidates in the a week or so.

It is going to be Brown, a promotion from within. Who else would take the job knowing that GMZ is on the one year leash and that the front office is unwilling to assemble the talent necessary to win at this level. Too much of the roster should still be at AAA Tacoma (or lower), so it makes sense to have the former Rainier’s skipper teach them how to win.

Robbie Thompson is just Wedge-lite and we know how that ended.
