Five Mariners become free agents, important dates to remember

With the World Series ending last night in Boston, the offseason begins today. That means free agency begins today. The Mariners had five players on the 40-man roster become free agents today.

  • Endy Chavez, outfielder
  • Raul Ibanez, outfielder
  • Kendrys Morales, designated hitter
  • Humberto Quintero, catcher
  • Oliver Perez, reliever

That means the Mariners roster is now at 35 players.

Obviously, the big question is with Morales. The Mariners can offer him a qualifying offer of 1-year at just over $14 million. He must then

Managerial search roundup: Lots of names, little major league experience

For a little clarification, there have been a lot of reports – mostly from CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman – of several people “interviewing” for the Mariners’ open managerial position.

Technically, that’s true in the sense. Five people have met with general manager Jack Zduriencik to discuss the job. However, the formality of these interviews is far from exact.

A quick managerial search update

CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman reported that GM Jack Zduriencik interviewed Chip Hale yesterday.

Per Mariners sources, Zduriencik and Hale did meet in Phoenix. But it wasn’t necessarily a formal interview. Zduriencik is said to still be combing through an extensive list of candidates and trying to whittle it down to a workable number of finalists.

The meeting with Hale was also convenient since Zduriencik is in Arizona scouting the Arizona Fall League and Hale resides in Tucson. Hale has been a candidate all along. He interviewed for the position in 2009.

The Mariners expect
