Not surprising that Nick Franklin gets a day off. Last night’s game wasn’t one of his best. But mistakes from Franklin, Brad Miller, Mike Zunino and Abraham Almonte shouldn’t be a surprise, but expected because of their inexperience.
Eric Wedge mentioned the team’s youth again pregame. It’s become a familiar refrain as the season winds down.
“What you are seeing from us, particularly late in ball games, it’s just evident of the lack of experience,” Wedge said. ”A lot of these guys got to the big leagues quick, whether it was this year, last year or the year before. Some of them are still trying to get it going and figure it out. And the ones that just go here, you are seeing some of the things that are happening. That’s just part of it. You are going to make young mistakes when you are that inexperienced up here.”
Still, the mistakes are not being overlooked
“Our coaches do a great job, they address when it needs to be addressed, whether it be immediately, the next inning, after teh game or the next day – depending on the emotions involved with it,” Wedge said. “Everything that happens, they learn from it.”
It’s been a few years of learning with not many wins for general manager Jack Zduriencik and Wedge.
“Unless you go out and play a ton of money, you have to go through these growing pains to ultimately be a championship club,” Wedge said.
