9-1 -- lineups

Good to see Michael Saunders back in the line-up after missing a few days with hamstring tightness. This is actually one of the better line-ups the Mariners can put out there. Yes, Ackley is batting eighth still. Yes, he’s hitting better than Nick Franklin. But I don’t make the line-up.

Since it’s Sept. 1, roster expand to 40 — meaning any player on the 40-man roster can join the big league team. The Mariners made one expanded roster call up with reliever Tom Wilhelmsen joining the team today. Catcher Mike Zunino is flying to Kansas City to meet the team. He caught nine innings last night in Tacoma going 0-for-4.

Zunino will be in the starting line-up tomorrow and catching Felix Hernandez. Wedge said that he will wait till after Tacoma’s season finale on Monday before he calls up any more players.

Remember players must be on the 40-man roster to get called up. So players like Stefen Romero, Logan Bawcom, Ty Kelly or Nate Tenbrink, who have all played well for the Mariners would have to be added. That’s just not going to happen. The Mariners only have one open spot on the 40-man right now. But it’s possible, we’ll see Xavier Avery, who they acquired in the Michael Morse trade, and a handful of pitchers.

Zunino catching is the future. Miller and Franklin could be at the top of the line up for years to come. I am sort of surprised that Ryan is not playing in the day game after the night game / get away game. Given last night’s infielder sloppiness, I would have thought it automatic. RH batter vs. LHP as well. But it is the skipper’s last month, so he makes the calls.

Is Paxton on the 40 man? Or will Hultzen come up and throw a couple of innings? We will see Tuesday.

In an ideal world Gutierrez would be in center, Saunders in right, and Ackley in left – but, in an ideal world, Guti wouldn’t have a body that keeps breaking. Still – this outfield can run down a lot of fly balls!

It will be interesting to watch what they do if Nick Franklin doesn’t figure it out right away. I realize nothing will happen this year, and everyone hits well in spring training so he’ll start next season at second… but, if they have to send him down, will they move Ackley back to second?
