Now before everyone freaks out at the headline, Erasmo Ramirez will still make his start on Tuesday in Kansas City. This is a paper move to bring up Abraham Almonte. Big league rosters expand to 40 on Sunday, so the Mariners will bring back Ramirez on Sunday. Actually, I don’t even think he will leave the team.

Obviously, Walker replaces Michael Morse, who was traded earlier today, on the 25-man roster. Almonte will replace Ramirez.

Almonte, who the Mariners acquired from the Yankees for pitcher Shawn Kelley,  earned this promotion. He was the Rainiers best player the second half of the season. In 91 games, he hit .314 with a .403 OBP and .491 slugging percentage. He had 17 doubles, five triples and 11 homers and 50 RBI. He also stole 20 bases.

Good for Almonte, and good for the M’s! Almonte is a little undersized at major league players go, but he’s got one thing going in his favor….consistent performance at a pretty high level!

This is likely a signal that Gutierrez won’t be back in 2014, despite being a free agent. The M’s are not likely to make an offer.

He showed off his arm, bat and his poise tonight. Spring training is going to be awesome. There are positions and jobs open.
