The Seattle Mariners, who play Toronto at 7:10 tonight at Safeco Field, have announced three roster moves, listed below with comments from acting manager Robby Thompson:

* Right-handed pitcher Tom Wilhelmsen has been optioned to the Tacoma Rainiers.

Thompson: “We wanted him to go back down and regain his confidence, pinpoint that fastball – of having precise command with it like he’s had in the past, so his secondary stuff can work off of that instead of trying go to that to throw a strike or get them to swing at pitches out of the zone or if he’s behind in the count. It’s been tough for him. The idea is to get him down there and let him start for a couple of innings and really work on really command of the fastball. His other stuff will play once he gets command of that fastball on a consistent basis. A few days off and on, he’ll have some time to work on the side on things down there and then back to starting again and then continuing on from there.”

(Thompson also clarified that while Wilhelmsen is getting his work in the first and second innings, he is not being converted to a starter. It’s just a matter of letting him get his work in on a regular schedule without waiting in the bullpen and coming in in unknown game situations.)

* And outfielder Franklin Gutierrez has returned from a rehab assignment at Tacoma, but remains on the 15-day disables list.

Thompson: “He’s still not 100 percent. He still has a couple of good days and a couple of bad days. I think we’ll pull him off and I think it’s a five-day period where he’ll be able to get treatment and he’ll be able to hit in the cage and he’ll throw and start his rehab assignment then. Just talking with him, when he does come back we need him to be at a point where we can use him against right-handers or left-handers, maybe back-to-back days. If he’s not playing he needs to be ready on the bench to maybe pinch hit later, or maybe pinch run and go out to the outfield. Right now he’s not really to that point where he feels comfortable and confident enough to come back right now.”

* Right-handed pitcher Carter Capps has been recalled from Triple-A Tacoma.

Thompson: “Power arm, obviously. He’s been throwing pretty well down there. A guy who can come up and give us multiple innings. And once again, we know what Carter has done in the past, and he was sent down to work on some things also. Hopefully with his return we’ll see that – we’ll see a little bit of advancement from him, and he’ll be a guy we’ll be going to.”

Finally, the club released outfielder Jason Bay. He had appeared in 68 games, batting .204 with 11 home runs and 20 RBI. He had signed with Seattle as a free agent in December and was designated for assignment on July 29.

I do not expect to see Guti before the rosters expand in September, if at all this season. He is at the center of our outfield mess.

What is the word on Jason Bay? Has he accepted a trip to Tacoma? Did somebody claim him?

Has GMZ signed a contract extension (so moves can be made)?

  2. Don Ruiz says:

Four roster moves: The club released Bay. I’ve added a paragraph above.

..ok, then briefly on bay..stats similar to morse..who’s gonna go…?hope bay catches on, deserves better….m’s “plan” for morse must be …united in the knowledge this player has no purpose/future whatsoever on this team…totally wasted year to this point..almost 70 s/o in 240 ab…please just say adios and dont let the door hit ya…pretty clear if morales wants to stay…do it!..and speaking of plans, tom w a starter…wtfo…try capps in rotation..kinda makes alot more sense…which means these folks will do/have done the exact opposite…go m’s…..please

  4. bbnate420 says:

How does Capps as a starter make any sense right now? The guy doesn’t even have a SECOND reliable pitch yet. You can’t start with just a fastball, no matter how good it is.

  5. dakineinthemuk says:

…will be much simpler to teach capps a couple of user friendly pitchers, changeup, cutter, some kind of breaking ball, just working on changing speeds…the kid has great stuff…if you remember nolan ryan…great fast ball..norm sherry gets with him…voila–curve ball anf rest history…ok, ok…i hear ya already…just seems like such a waste of great stuff in the bullpen…come on jack..what do ya get to lose….oh, i see…

  6. bbnate420 says:

You’re right. What was I thinking? Just teach him a pitch or 2 and he’ll be Nolan Ryan! Great advice, retard.

  7. wabubba67 says:

    Ever the friendly one, bbnate.

The first step is to admit that you have a problem. It’s a strength to do so, not a weakness. Be brave, little bbs.

  8. dakineinthemuk says:

…ok then…i really thought i had made it CLEAR that capps could possibly be more successful with additional pitch/pitches as nolan ryan did…i watched him pitch many games in so cal w/angels and the fast ball was overpowering, was curve ball just wasn’t fair…your inference that that mr capps was next ryan was uh, ludicrous…and the little name calling was extraordinarily poorly chosen but in your case passes for “humor”…how bout just baseball chat…that’s what i’m here for….

  9. bbnate420 says:

    Sorry, dak. My bad.

See, wabubba. I will apologize if I’m wrong. You can now return to making unintelligible and idiotic comments about Griffey.

  10. bbnate420 says:

I guess what I said about you really hit home, eh wabubba? Why else would you still be all butt hurt about it a week later? I guess even you realize it was true.

  11. wabubba67 says:

Stay classy, bb. My comments about Griffey are seemingly unintelligent and idiotic only to the ignorant, naive, or forgetful.

  12. wabubba67 says:

I’m very proud of you for apologizing, little bbs. You must be going through an emotional and intellectual puberty of some sort. Congrats…maybe the little bbs will grow into ball bearings!

  13. bbnate420 says:

I can’t believe that anyone would hire you to teach people. Surely it must be the kids that ride the short bus.

  14. wabubba67 says:

    You’re my bi-atch, little bbs.

  15. bbnate420 says:

    Keep it classy, grandpa.

  16. wabubba67 says:

Go get me a beer, tiny bbs. And grab a juicebox for yourself.
