Humberto Quintero flew into Seattle from his Houston home so fast Friday afternoon that his luggage lagged behind.
“My clothes just got here today (Saturday),” Quinerto said.
With the injury to starting catcher Mike Zunino — a broken hand that’s expected to keep him out six weeks — the Mariners acted fast in signing a veteran catcher to share catching duties with Henry Blanco, the club’s only other active catcher on the 25-man roster.
The Phillies designated the 33-year-old Venezuelan for assignment Wednesday after hitting .250 in 68 plate appearances over 24 games. The Mariners picked him up in free agency after clearing waivers, and he flew in just two hours before Friday’s 13-inning marathon. He worked in the bullpen during the 3-2 loss, getting acclimated with the pitching staff.
