I was on with KJR talking Ian Furness and Jason Puckett and talking about the call-up of Mike Zunino.

After that, I was also on The Zone on KPUG in Bellingham also talking Zunino.

I was on the Steve Sandmeyer show yesterday talking about Mariners ownership issues.

  1. On topic: IMO, calling up Zunino when he’s struggling at aaa is a HUGE mistake. I’d like to see Jack Z depart. Didn’t we have a serviceable catcher last year, a guy by the name of Jaso??

Off topic: I said the same last time he was on the team before Betancourt all but destroyed his career: Chavez should be a full time starter.

  2. bbnate420 says:

moo, no, Jaso was a horrible catcher the likes of a Jesus Montero. He could hit against righties. That’s it. He currently has a .704 OPS in Oakland. He’s hardly tearing it up. Morse currently has a .746 OPS, and I expect it to be above .800 by the end of the year once he gets healthy. It is fair to question why they don’t play Shoppach and Bantz for the next week, but I hardly think this is a HUGE mistake.

  3. Personally, I would like to see them wait to call him up, just for Super-2 purposes. His strugge in AAA is hitting for average, but his power and RBI numbers are good and his defense and leadership have been outstanding. Looks like they just weren’t comfortable with Bantz having to catch another 2-3 times before Sucre comes off the DL.

Moo, when Chavez was on the team a few years back he was a full-time starter. Every time he has been a full-time player his game gets exposed a little bit.

I know you have a man-crush on Jaso, and he was a solid player for us last year, but you have somehow transformed him into the second coming of Johnny Bench. Jaso is a below-average defensive catcher who struggles against lefties.

  4. I don’t think Jaso is the second coming, I called him “serviceable”; i.e. better than anything else we’ve got. I’m concerned we’re damaging Zunino calling him up too soon.

  5. Yes, you did call him serviceable. However, we traded serviceable for a guy who is a better player, Morse. Remember the cries for more players that could hit the ball out of the park? Pretty sure you were one of the people saying that.
