Stanford right-hander Mark Appel was a top-10 MLB draft pick for the second consecutive year. He went to the Pittsburgh Pirates at No. 8 last year, but turned them down and returned to school for his junior season.
The decision paid off as the Houston Astros selected him No. 1 today.
That doesn’t mean he won’t decide to forgo the pick and return for yet another year at Stanford, but it’s hard to believe since he went with the top overall pick. He rejected a $3.8 million deal from the Pirates last year.
His sister, Jayne Appel, plays center for the San Antonio Stars and also went to Stanford.
