Afternoon. I’m here to to handle the last game of this homestand. Divish is already in San Diego.

Pretty quiet at the ball yard today.

Michael Saunders is back in there tonight after getting yesterday off. He’s had a dismal couple weeks. Saunders’ average has rocketed down to .216. Eleven games ago, he was hitting .286. Essentially, Eric Wedge said Saunders got into a dreaded stretch where he was chasing, then pressing, then not producing. Saunders is hitting sixth tonight. This year, he has 94 at-bats leading off, 16 at-bats second and six at-bats hitting sixth.

Wedge said that Justin Smoak took swings Tuesday for the first time since straining an oblique Saturday. Wedge said Smoak is likely to take some BP Wednesday in San Diego.

Smoak being out is a blessing in disguise. I like Kendrys at first, and give someone else a chance at DH who can hit and knock in runs. This has to be Smoak’s last year with M’s if he ends up hitting between .220 and .240 with, say, 9 home runs and 40 rbi’s. Those numbers look pretty impossible to obtain after more than one third of the season gone for Smoak. Nice to see Harang throw a shutout. He gets a reprieve, even if it was San Diego. Can he do the same against New York, or Texas, or Oakland – that is the big question. I would guess no. Let’s see what Saunders can do next. These guys have to know they need to produce or be sent packing.
