Felix Hernandez was his usual bouncy self today in the clubhouse. Mariners manager Eric Wedge said he fully expects Hernandez to make his next start after tweaking his back in the sixth inning of Tuesday night’s loss.
“He said he was pretty sore still this morning,” Wedge said. “He feels good. (Trainer) Rick (Griffin) felt like he got him in a good place last night after the game and it’s going good today, so we should be fine.”
Wedge said he doesn’t think there will be any alteration in preparation or routine for Hernandez. The lower back has nagged him this season, and that wheel and hard throw to second gave him a jolt last night. Wedge took out Hernandez as a precaution, which Hernandez was not pleased about, and it is expected to keep him in line for his next start as a result.
Franklin Gutierrez (hamstring) ran again Wednesday and came out of it well. He’s expected to start a rehab assignment Thursday or Friday. Reliever Josh Kinney (stress reaction in his ribs) is expected to pitch Friday in Tacoma. He was placed on the the 60-day DL April 1.
Dustin Ackley back in there today, hitting second. Wedge said he likes the look at 3-4-5 with Kyle Seager hitting third.
