5-7 -- updated lineup

UPDATE (5:38 p.m. EST) — the Pirates have made a few significant line-up changes. First of all, starting pitcher James McDonald has been scratched from his start and placed on the 15-day disabled list with shoulder stiffness. He will be replaced by right-hander Jeanmar Gomez.

From Jeff Evans of the Mariners … here’s who has actually hit against Gomez.

5-7 -- gomez stuffNot exactly a huge sample size of people to have faced him. And two of those guys aren’t in the line-up. Manager Eric Wedge said it’s a little too late to go change the line-up based on Gomez.

Also of note … catcher Russell Martin was scratched with a stiff neck. Michael McKenry will replace him.

This will be Kyle Seager’s second time batting No. 3. Wedge decided to go with Justin Smoak in the line-up today over Kendrys Morales with no designated hitter spot. I’m assuming Morales will start at first base tomorrow. Wedge said he’d likely split up the playing time.

Wedge has adjusted the rotation a little for the A’s series this weekend.

I’d like to see Harang help his own cause today. 1 for 2 with a bloop single and a sac bunt is my guess.

If it were me, I’d give Morales the bulk of the at-bats, since he’s far out-hit Smoak. And, given the awful options available, I’d put Ryan back in the starting lineup (as he is today, I see) – neither Ryan nor Andino have any power, so their roughly equal OBP is what matters offensively; and defensively there’s no contest.

I’m still not sold on Bay’s resurgence, but I’d certainly rather see him than Ibañez.

In any case – given the crap roster Zduriencik and Wedge put together, this lineup is about as good as can be expected – excepting that Morales is sitting instead of Smoak.
