Casper Wells has been claimed off of waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays. It was first reported by Peter Gammons. And a source within the Mariners has confirmed it, and now the Mariners have announced the move.

Wells was designated for assignment prior to opening day after losing the battle for the last outfield spot with Jason Bay. He’s been in baseball limbo ever since. The Mariners tried to trade him but there were no takers.  The Mariners had hoped to sneak him through waivers and outright him to Tacoma. Instead, he was claimed.

In parts of two seasons with Seattle, Wells hit .225 (87-for-387) with 13 doubles, 3 triples, 17 home runs and 51 RBI in 124 games. He had a .304 on-base percentage and slugged .406 (OPS of .710).

But the scuffling Blue Jays claimed Wells. They will now have to place him on their 25-man roster.

The Mariners will also make a roster move for bullpen help after last night’s draining debacle. Left-hander Bobby LaFromboise will be called up today and will likely replace fellow lefty Lucas Luetge in the bullpen. Why Luetge? Well, he hasn’t been particularly sharp this season, this spring or at the end of last season- and he has Triple A options.

LaFromboise was the Rainiers pitcher of the year last, making 27 relief appearances, posting a 5-2 record with 1.59 ERA.

Why LaFromboise? Well, he’s on the 40-man roster. The Mariners didn’t want to have to make an extra roster move and take someone off the 40-man to put someone like Jeremy Bonderman, Brian Sweeney or Logan Bawcom on the team.

Why not Danny Hultzen? He’s a starting pitcher. You don’t do that to top starting pitching prospects unless you are Bill Bavasi and Mike Hargrove.
