The facts

The Mariners continue to pound out hits and score runs.  This time they racked up 14 hits in the win over the Angels. There was even a little drama. With the score tied 8-8 in the ninth, Julio Morban singled over a drawn in outfield to score Francisco Martinez from third to give the Mariners a walk-off win (ab0ve).

Play of the game

While Morban got the walk-off credit, it was Martinez’s one-out triple that set up the heroics. The speedy Martinez, who was acquired in the Doug Fister trade two years ago, took three straight balls to start the at-bat. After watching a strike, he laced a 95 mile per hour fastball off of reliever R.J. Alvarez to right field corner. Martinez showed his speed as he went from home to third.

Runner up to Martinez’s play was Alex Liddi’s two-run homer in the seventh inning. Liddi destroyed a fastball from Matt Oye that cleared the outfield berm.

Who was hot

Justin Smoak continues to swing well from the left-side of the plate. He hit a hard chopper down the first base line for a first inning double. He also had nice line drive single to center field in the fourth inning. For the Angels, Conger, who was born in Federal Way and lived there briefly, finished 3-for-3 with a single, double, homer and five RBI.

Who was not

The Angels defense was not good at all. Los Angeles committed three errors and had two wild pitches. Mariners’ lefty Anthony Fernandez struggled in his one inning of work, giving up three runs on three hits with two walks

Extra innings

Both Brendan Ryan and Dustin Ackley made their Cactus League debuts. Ryan, sporting new striped socks, homered in his first at-bat of the season. “It’s good to get one early, maybe I’ll mix one in in April, maybe get four this year.” … Ackley went 1-for-3 with a triple to left-center that hit off the wall at the 385 foot mark. … John Hicks is now 5-for-5 in his Cactus League career and 3-for-3 this season. Hicks fell behind 0-2, worked the count to 3-2 and then lined a hard single to right field to score a run. … Jon Garland threw a live batting practice session and he will likely appear in a game in the next few days.

Right-hander Hishashi Iwakuma will make his first start of the spring as the Mariners travel to Maryvale to play the Milwaukee Brewers. Also scheduled to pitch are lefties Joe Saunders and Oliver Perez. The Brewers will start Yovani Gallardo. First pitch is set for 12:05. The game will not be broadcast live on local radio.
