A few notes and a videos from the first workout

The first workout of spring training was under sunny skies and mid 60s temperature, which means it will be nicer than the home opener  at Safeco Field.

Pitchers and catcher workouts are far from exciting. There’s a lot of Pitchers Fielding Practice (PFP) which consists of pitchers fielding ground balls on the mound and covering first base.

There were probably 15 position players out for the workout as well. Dustin Ackley, Kyle Seager, Brendan Ryan, Justin Smoak, Michael Saunders, Brad Miller, Carlos Triunfel, Stefen Romero, Eric Thames, Carlos Peguero, Alex Liddi, Julio Morban, Casper Wells, Vinnie Catricala were all out working out and taking batting practice. Never a bad thing to see that many position players there early.

There really isn’t much to glean from the first workout.  You can’t really tell too much about what’s going on. I missed seeing Smoak, Ackley, Saunders, Seager and Ryan taking BP.]

Taijuan Walker and Brandon Maurer – roommates here in Peoria – have dyed their hair blond. It’s an interesting look. Walker has really filled out physically and looks nothing like the skinny 18 year old kid we met after he was drafted.

Both Jeremy Bonderman (video above)and Jon Garland (video on top) threw bullpens and looked like they were throwing free and easy – always a good sign. I really won’t be surprised if one of them makes the rotation as the No. 5. It’s obvious that Oliver Perez is ahead of everyone else since he will pitch  in the WBC. His bullpen session was slightly more intense than the rest.

Eric Thames looks like a football player still. He might even be bigger than last season. Guy isn’t afraid to lift a few weights.

Watching BP for the catchers, the ball makes an interesting sound coming off the bat of Mike Zunino. He really has some pop. First time I saw John Hicks catch and hit, he was impressive.

Pitcher Jhonny Nunez and catcher Ronny Paulino are not here because of visa issues.

Ah Spring Training reports. Love these. Any chance your bosses at TNT will upgrade your flip-phone camera to maybe like an iPhone 3 or something, Ryan?
Great to hear about all of the position players here early. Not sure what the norm is each year, but sounds like a ton of starters are here already. Most excellent.

Oliver perez isn’t only one that is ahead, the pitchers who been playing winter ball, should also be ahead as not much of break time for them..

I second that, jchawks08. It’s cool to have the video, but it would be nice if it had more than 3-4 pixels in it.

  4. I’m actually using the newest iPod touch for videos. Though I will admit I’m not very adept at using it. I’m still trying to figure stuff out. The Mariners are actually providing us withe video (shot by ROOT Sports camera guys). That’s where the Felix press conference video came from. Not sure why it’s so pixelated though.
