While we don’t get to speak with Felix Hernandez today, general manager Jack Zduriencik did give a brief statement to the media about the contract extension negotiations.

“It’s no secret we’ve been in negotiations. We’ve had really good discussions with his two representatives – Scotty Pucino and Wil Polidor. Myself and Jeff Kingston and Bart Waldman have engaged significantly. Although I don’t  have an update for you right now, I would say that things have been very positive. There’s been a good tone to our discussions. And I hope on a positive note that sooner than later we will be able to announce something. But anything of this magnitude – both in terms or years and dollars – just takes time to work things out. But I would say at this moment, it’s been real positive. And hopefully, sooner than later we’ll have something to say to that will be significant.”

With Zduriencik coming in and making that statement, things are obviously close to being done. It’s possible the announcement could come as early as tomorrow.

Here’s the audio ….

Hernandez is scheduled to take his normal physical with the rest of the pitchers and catchers sometime today.
