It’s no secret that the Seattle Mariners would love to sign Felix Hernandez to a contract extension. He’s the face of the franchise and easily one of the four best players in baseball.

On Tuesday, FoxSports’ Ken Rosenthal wrote that the Mariners are weighing a 4-year, $100 million contract extension offer for Hernandez.

It is not known whether the Mariners actually have made Hernandez such an offer; one source described the two sides as “dancing” but not deeply engaged. But a $100 million extension added to the final two years of Hernandez’s current contract would amount to six years, $139.5 million — a starting point for further discussions, and perhaps even a reasonable framework for a deal.

The question for Felix Hernandez: Is that enough?

Zack Greinke just got $147 million. CC Sabathia got $122 million from the Yankees. In two years when his contract, how much could he ask for on the open market? Could it be $175 million or more?

There’s also some talk in this Rosenthal story about the Mariners signing Kelly Shoppach. That’s a possibility. But according to Twitter, the Mariners are also on the verge of signing veteran Ronny Paulino. I’m told that Paulino still has to pass his physical. It will not be a full major league contract. I’m told its still a minor league contract with a non-roster invite to spring training. The money listed in the tweet would be contingent on Paulino making the squad out of spring training.
