Baseball Canada released its provisional roster today for the upcoming World Baseball Classic. As expected, Mariners outfielder Michael Saunders was on the roster. Saunders has said that he wanted to represent his country in the international competition.
Former Mariners prospects Phillippe Aumont and Tyson Gillies, who were part of the Cliff Lee trade, are also on the roster. Recently signed outfielder Jason Bay has decided not to play in the WBC and focus on earning a spot on the Mariners 25-man roster.
As for other Mariners representing their countries, Hisashi Iwakuma has decided not to play for Japan. But you can expect Felix Hernandez and probably Franklin Gutierrez to play for the Venezuelan team.
So Gutierrez is going to miss June.
Not surprising.
I’m sure he’ll contract an incurable hangnail doctors can’t find–or cure –until his contract expires.
Really, though, we fans have to look at this as a good thing.
Think how disorienting it would be if Gutierrez actually contributed?
