Cleveland makes a hard sell to Nick Swisher (updated 6:14 p.m.)


Update (6:14 p.m) – Jon Heyman tweeted that Swisher will not meet with the Mariners on his free agent tour.  A source within the Mariners confirmed that they have stopped pursuing Swisher. It didn’t sound as though Swisher was ever really serious about signing with Seattle.

The Cleveland Indians met with outfielder Nick Swisher on Tuesday and pulled out all the stops while wooing the free agent switch-hitter. They even enlisted the help of a person who is familiar with recruiting. Former Ohio State coach Jim Tressel ate lunch with Swisher and others at progressive field.

A few notes and reaction to the Josh Hamilton signing …

One of the debates about Josh Hamilton signing with the Angels was whether or not the Mariners were truly making a competitive offer to the all-star outfielder.

According to sources, they were in all the way. The Mariners offered Hamilton a four-year, $100 million deal with vesting options for a fifth and sixth year. Those options were easily attainable, probably along the lines of 400 to 450 plate appearances, which Hamilton could have gotten in playing about 100 games.

So if the options were so easily attainable, why not just offer Hamilton the fifth year? Well, it’s protection in case

Josh Hamilton signs with …. the Angels

The Los Angeles Angels love playing the mystery team that swoops in steals the big-name free agent at the end. A year ago, they did it with Albert Pujols. Now they have done the same thing with Josh Hamilton.

Hamilton has reportedly agreed to a 5-year contract with the Angels, leaving on the Mariners on the outside looking in.

We have yet to hear how much the dollar figure are for, but I’m guessing it’s a least $130 million. I was a little off …
