The Mariners search for hitting has led them to conversations with free agent  Mike Napoli.  The DH/1B/catcher  was an all-star in 2011 after having a career season with the Texas Rangers, hitting .320 with 30 homers and 75 RBI. He posted a monster 1.046 OPS that season.

But in 2012, Napoli regressed. A series of leg injuries caused him issues. He hit .227 with 24 homers and 56 RBI and a .812 OPS.

According to the Boston Globe, Napoli met with the Red Sox and was offered a three-year contract. While the blog says he will meet with the Mariners, Napoli has already in fact met with the Mariners earlier in the week.

He made $9.4 million last season with the Rangers – a product of his monster 2011 season.

Obviously, he would be looking at  more than that.

Would you be willing to pay $11 or $12 million a year over four years for Napoli services?

Not no…Hell no! The Mariners don’t need another over the hill .222 hitter. Especially with the young catching prospects waiting in the wings.

That potential deal with Napoli doesn’t do much for me. I’d pass on 4 years and 10-12 million per. It sounds like health and age issues are starting to creep up on him. So I’d say keep shopping.

Keep Shopping. Overaged free agents have not been successful with the Mariners.

After the whole Figgins thing, I surely hope Jack Z would not offer a 31 coming off of a down season a four year deal. I guess if no other hitters want to play in Seattle, he has to make some sort of move. But this should be last resort. I wonder how many years it will take for the pain, heartache and embarassment from the Figgins deal to go away? Will it ever?
    Go M’s!

No way. Maybe 2 years if they can’t pull anything else off.

I think you go hard for wil Myers and then do the same with swisher. Having a young stud like Myers would really be exciting. He could be had too.

  7. WTraveler says:

No question Myers could be had but he’s still just another “prospect” and we already have plenty of them. We need proven major league ball players that can hit for power.

  8. No. In addition to age and health issues, he’s just getting bigger and bigger, which means continuing injury problems, esp. for a catcher.
