The Mariners announced today that they claimed outfielder Scott Cousin off of waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays.  Toronto had claimed Cousins off of waivers about two weeks before that.

Cousins, 27, split last season between AAA New Orleans and the Miami Marlins. With the Marlins he appeared in 53 games, batting .163 (14-for-86) with 4 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run and 3 RBI. He played all three outfield positions for the Marlins (LF – 6 G/0 GS, CF – 18 G/8 GS, RF – 12 G/6 GS). With New Orleans he batted .296 (69-for-233) in 61 games. He also played with the Marlins in 2010 (27 G) and 2011 (48 G).

He’s best known for the play where he took Buster Posey out at home plate.

With the addition of Cousins, the Mariners 40-man roster is now at 37 players. It’s important to note that Cousins does have a minor league option left. That looms large since Mike Carp, Casper Wells and Trayvon Robinson do not.

Over seven minor league seasons he has combined to bat .279 with 106 doubles, 21 triples, 62 home runs and 280 RBI. Cousins was originally selected out of the University of San Francisco in the third round of the 2006 June draft.

A team already crowded with marginal outfielders finds room for another one on the 40 man roster. Hoping the scouts saw something in this move, because on paper it doesn’t seem to be all that impactful.

huh? how does this make ANY sense? Maybe Tacoma needs an outfielder.

  3. Cousins is just another piece for the 40-man roster. If the Mariners do make a deal in the offseason, players like Carp, Robinson, Peguero or Wells could be throw ins for package deal. Cousins gives them some depth. The extra minor league option is also useful. At this point, you can’t really rely on Gutierrez for more than 100 games a season.
